How to Create a Race/Event
Safety Considerations
Ensure you select a route with as few intersections and traffic signals as possible.Avoid routes and CSs that have high traffic volume (if you live in a populated area, encourage your athletes to make race attempts at non-peak traffic hours.)Ensure the competitive CSs (i.e., full course, climbs, sprints, and time trial) do not end at stop signs or traffic signals. This ensures that athletes do not enter intersections a high speeds.)Minimize left-hand turns as that will require your athletes to cross oncoming traffic.Avoid routes and CSs on dangerous roads or trails.Avoid the use of roads through residential areas.Avoid the use of public walking paths/trails.Other Considerations
When do you want to have the race, and how long do you want to give athletes the opportunity to compete?Do you want to have a multi-loop race?Do you want to charge race registration fees? If so, you will need to let us know how we can transfer race registration fees to you after your race is complete.Think about helpful instructions for the athletes. Since your SODIrace event will not be like traditional races where people move in herds to the start line, you will need to provide instructions on where to park, what markers to look for to delineate the start and end of the competitive CSs on your route. How are you going to advertise your race. Your race will be visible to anyone visiting SODIrace, but you might want to do some active marketing and emailing to athletes in your community.Determine who are clubs in the area that might be interested in participating and let them know about it.Best Practices
Select a route is not too long or too challenging for the athletes that will be participating in the race.On the route you selected, pick out a good hill(s) to make the climbing CS, a short CS close to the finish for a sprint CS, and maybe a longer CS where you can put your athletes through a time trial experience.Keep SODIrace events open for no longer than a month to help keep athletes interested.Steps to Create a Race
- Login into SODIrace and select “Create a Race” under the “Races” menu item along the top of the application.
- Review the safety considerations and click “Got it” after you feel you have done your due diligence to create a safe race.
- Create the course.
- a. Select the “Full Course” CS.
- b. Select “Climbing” CS(s). Look for a CS(s) with the higher average grade to help identify your climbing CS(s).
- c. Select “Time Trial” CS(s). Look for CSs that are relatively long and flat and will challenge racers to pace themselves.
- d. Select “Sprint” CS(s). Look for CSs that are relatively short and allow the athletes to maximize their power output. It is always good to have sprints near the end of the race.
- Provide Race Information.
- a. Specify the basic information (i.e., Name, Description, Instructions, Start, and End Dates) about the race.
- b. Be sure to give any special instructions that would ensure athletes have the most positive experience possible (e.g., where to park your car, what are the features that indicate the start and endpoints for each CS, etc.)
- c. Provide athletes with any safety notes about hazards or conditions that would help ensure a safe experience.
- d. Make a decision if there is going to be a race registration fee for athletes. If there is:
- Specify how you would like to receive the funds you collected as a result of athlete registrations.
- Understand that SODIrace will take 8% + $1 out of athletes’ registrations as part of the fee to use the SODIrace platform.
- Understand that SODIrace will provide you a payment within a month after the end of the race.
- e. For advanced options, change the default age for the Silver (best old rider) and White (best young rider) jersey assignments.
- Read through and sign the Legal Paperwork.
